PROGRAM
A-HOME provides safe, affordable rental housing in northern Westchester by purchasing, developing and managing properties for its current programs, which include independent supportive living for low-income older adults and disabled individuals and apartments for single parent families. Through A-HOME's case management and linkages with human service agencies, it has the ability to provide the needed support that helps individuals to live as independently as their potential allows. Volunteers step in to fill the gap between services provided and the needs of residents. house

A-HOME owns nine properties with 13 houses: six for older adults, three for disabled individuals, two for single parent families and two intergenerational for older adults and families. A four family apartment building is managed for the Town of Bedford's Blue Mountain Housing Development Corporation. For seniors and individuals A-HOME uses the shared housing model where individuals have their own rooms and share common areas, such as bath, kitchen and living rooms. A-HOME's two intergenerational housing properties incorporate apartments for single parent families and shared living or studio apartments for older adults. Four stand-alone apartments for single parent families were recently completed.

Single Parent and Family Housing

Apartments in Bedford Hills, Croton Falls and Katonah (apartments in Katonah are owned by the Blue Mountain Housing Development Corporation and managed by A-HOME) offer housing to families. Eleven families, including 17 children, have been able to move from substandard, overcrowded housing to a safe, affordable home at A-HOME.  Funding restrictions on several of the properties limits residency to single-parent families.

Support for the families is available through a full-time Case Manager, the Family Independence Fund and volunteer help such as financial management consultation.

Independent Supportive Shared Senior Housing

The ability to be self-sufficient is a criteria for acceptance to A-HOME and residents are encouraged to remain independent. Houses in Bedford Hills, Chappaqua, Katonah and Thornwood are located close to shopping and town centers to allow residents aged 55 and older access to grocery stores, libraries and other amenities. Each adult has a private bedroom and shares the common areas of the house.

Including two intergenerational properties, A-HOME has seven houses for seniors. Case management is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and volunteers are available to seniors when needed for help getting to appointments and enhancing their quality of life and integration into their neighborhood.

Independent Shared Supportive Housing for Individuals with Disabilities

A-HOME has developed and manages three shared homes in Mount Kisco and South Salem for individuals with disabilities. Each individual has a private bedroom and shares the common areas of the house. Two of the houses are located close to a town center and residents can walk to shopping, the bus line or train station. The third home is located in a more rural area of northern Westchester and residents of that house need to provide their own transportation. The ability to live independently is necessary for admission to A-HOME and disabled residents are encouraged in their independence and many have part or full-time employment.

As with the older adult residents, case management is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and a volunteer program is available as needed.

In Development

In Pound Ridge we are in contract to create twelve units for seniors. A community survey is in progress which will help A-HOME to better understand and serve the needs of northern Westchester’s volunteers, essential services personnel and those priced out of the housing rental market. And finally, we have created the Family Independence Fund to provide support to our single parent residents so that they may improve their job skills, education levels and the ability to manage their finances in order to help them live more independently and securely.
